Prerequisite:

Prerequisites for participation in the Confined Space Rescue Technician Certification program are either a NFPA 1006 Rope Rescue Operations Certification, or evidence of training and competency in the Performance Objectives required for a NFPA 1006 Confined Space Rescue Operations Rescuer.

Description:

This course is intended for individuals that will be employed as rescue persons in a confined space capacity. Personnel are trained in not only the hazards and entry requirements of confined spaces, but will also acquire the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively coordinate, perform, and supervise a technical confined space rescue incident. The student will acquire skills and knowledge of ropes and knots, respiratory and communication systems, hazard recognition and appropriate control measures, patient packaging, atmospheric monitoring, advanced concepts in incident command, rescue strategies and tactics, rope based rescue systems, site management, team leadership, equipment and resource management, information gathering and utilization, advanced rescue techniques, technical rescue pre-planning and rescue scene management and toxicology. This program meets the training requirements for basic and general entry operations as determined by most state/provincial regulatory bodies and National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1006 Confined Space Rescue Technician Level. At the end of this highly interactive training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify types and classes of confined spaces
  • Understand local safe work regulations in regards to confined spaces
  • Utilize hazard recognition and mitigation techniques
  • Utilize the incident command system and basic emergency scene management
  • Choose appropriate ventilation types and techniques
  • Choose and operate personal protective equipment
  • Use atmospheric monitoring equipment
  • Understand team positions and responsibilities
  • Use supplied air respirators and/or self contained breathing apparatus
  • Rig rescue systems for confined spaces
  • Understand tripod rigging and use
  • Build simple and compound mechanical advantage systems
  • Utilize rescue ropes and tie applicable knots
  • Package a patient
  • Perform emergency decontamination
